Going into Afghanistan wasn't a mistake, and holding Afghanistan with 5-10 thousand troops as a force multiplier for the ANDSF was a perfectly sustainable status quo.

I'm not spending a lot of time on this, maybe that's wrong. I base that on understanding the passionate views in the wake of 9-11. For me, it's much more important to understand how we allow the mistake to continue for 2 decades.

What mistake? The Taliban was harboring, and will continue to harbor Al Qaeda. That makes them an enemy two decades ago and an enemy today.
