Sure ... but peep this - my grandmother had greedy children. She owned two houses in Sierra Madre, CA back in the 40s. She passed them on to uncles and aunts that simply squandered that value. You have any idea how many millions that property is worth right now? Ah well, bad luck.

My wife’s grandmother owned 100 acres of near-coastal farmland in Oregon. When her grandfather died, the grandma sold it all at fire sale prices so she could stop working and travel till the end of her days. Bad luck. You know what 100 acres of near coastal Oregon real estate is worth today? Fuck!

I could’ve started this game a multimillionaire. But .. you know ... other people got to it and squandered it like a bunch of kids.

Doesn’t mean the system is bad. It means the contrary - the system is good. The money is out there flowing. Maybe you start high on the chain. Maybe all your relatives picked the meat off the family wealth beast and left you the bones. Wherever you start, there’s movement, and you could go up or down.

You have to be one below-average, lazy, unproductive slob not to appreciate a system like that.

Comes down to utilities.

If it is adjacent to a developed municipality which could run the utilities out to build a subdivision, then it worth a mint.

If it's in the middle of nowhere, not so much.

My wife and I are both a generation removed from multimillions. Both never seeing a cent.

I started life in a run-down Barrio of Albuquerque called Martinez town. That family wealth had gone negative by the time I arrived on scene. But when I leave this life I should have some property to pass on to my own kids. Capital if not. Maybe they’ll squander it. Maybe they’ll build on it and their kids will squander it. Who knows?

Either way, I like the system where my family can go from millions, to poverty, and back up. Much better than starting out in a slightly better, government-subsidized poverty, but never having a chance to own anything great.

Ouch. My mom's family had money. They bought a high end player piano in the middle of The Depression. (Still in the family.) It had to be split by boatloads of kids, so my grandmother got a bit, but it didn't trickle very far; someone got fiscally irresponsible somewhere along the way. Plus there was some family fighting over the last bit of it when my great uncle died. My mom got nothing, even though he raised her. That feud lasted over 10 years.

My parents saved up a sum and left their kids with a healthy bit of change to add to the retirement fund. A bit of good luck. We three didn't have a single fight. My dad died in 2012 and my brother is still getting checks to his estate. On 3/21, my brother sent us a text; "got another check for $26. I'll buy you a drink next time I see you."

I'm just looking at prices, and even middle of nowhere wilderness Oregon is selling for $100,000 an acre.
