Lindbergh was no Armstrong. Armstrong was like Cincinnatus, he did the job, then he went back to Ohio to live a quiet life, never sought fame, never sought fortune, never wanted to be a politician.
That he did.
He is a standout, especially in today's social media-driven, look-at-me, attention whore culture of nobodies. The man was the first human to walk on a celestial object that wasn't Earth, and he didn't make any kind of deal out of it.
Fucking boss.

A short snippet from the badass link that some of you may have missed, this one always makes me smile:
You had to try really hard to throw something at Neil Armstrong that would generate any kind of emotional response. I don't really remember where I saw this, but my favorite Neil Armstrong story goes like this: One morning, Buzz Aldrin or Michael Collins (I can't remember which) came into the office to get started on work. Neil was sitting at his desk, working on some paperwork, and just looked up for a second to say "good morning" before going back to his writing. Buzz/Michael went to the NASA shift lead to ask what was going on that day, and was told by the NASA techs that the missions were scrapped today because about an hour ago Neil Armstrong was running a test flight on the Lunar Landing Module when it's equipment failed and it plummeted to the earth and exploded in a giant fireball. Neil had almost died, but had somehow managed to eject a mere 200 feet from the ground and parachuted to safety with only minor injuries. When Buzz/Michael protested that he'd just seen Neil two seconds ago, the NASA guy was like, "Oh, yeah… he's filling out the after-mission report."
Respect.
I have faith that the Declaration of Independence preamble will conquer the world by the market forces of freedom, and then it will reach for the stars in the wake of Armstrong, over time, as that Empire of Liberty travels out at relativistic velocities, they will put Armstrong in the pantheon with Joshua Bar Joseph himself.

Unpack all this please.
What's there to unpack? The part about Americans or the part about Europeans? What I said about Europeans is pretty straightforward. Idk how deep it goes in modern times, like how Southerners still talk shit about Yankees and hate them with a passion but on some level everyone is aware it's half jest and more of a coping mechanism for the erosion of what little cultural differences there still are in America. The part about Americans, hell, everyone knows our ethnicities have been wiped out. We don't have much sense of them other than the social construct that is being 'white.' That doesn't really mean anything. It serves as an identity in America but it doesn't serve one well. As a race, in general, I still think it's useful to use it as a mechanism for drawing distinctions but really Western Society is more accurate. As whites are replaced in Western Society, is it still accurate though? No. White will out of necessity have to remain the pitiful extent of ethnic identity we Americans will still have and I hope it never comes to that for Europeans. It probably wont, at least in eastern Europe for a long time.
OK I see what your saying but you think Norwegians don't see German folk like themselves at least more than Arabs and Jews?
I know for a fact at least one Norwegian hates Germans with a passion whatever else he may feel about the others lol

When I was a boy and I went to visit my cousins in California in the 70's, it was like Neil Armstrong was Jesus Christ already. They had a shrine to Neil Armstrong, a huge Neil Armstrong poster on the wall, and then they had models around it, the Saturn V the Lunar Lander and the Navy F9F Panther which he flew in Korea.

Oh, we did a lot of shopping, back then you couldn't get a lot of things from America in Canada, so they took me to the mall. Southern California, we spent a lot of time at the mall, back then that was where you could meet girls when you weren't old enough to go out with the big kids.

You can be whatever you want to be in America, perhaps you just lack perspective.
