If some kid in America asked me who they should look to, I'd tell them to look to their own, Hal Moore, John Paul Vann, Charles Beckwith, and Barry fuckin' Goldwater, let's go, baby.
Be interesting to start a role model thread, see who folks look up to.
Or who folks would encourage others to look up to.

I've seen some recommendations from folks I respect to check out Meditations, by Marcus Aurelius.
That's going pretty far back for a role model, but I'll probably check it out just to see why people are so impressed.
The problem with contemporary figures is we all know they're human, so no matter who gets named as a role model there will be a crowd of mud-slingers following right behind to tarnish their name.

Aurelius is great as a stoic philosopher and inspired me a lot but honestly he is kind of a crappy role model. Guy just gets cucked left and right and his Meditations is basically one big cope.

In terms of those who write, Andrew Bacevich, Karl Marlantes, Tim O'Brien, let's go, baby.

Seriously tho, Neil Armstrong, he's the ultimate American role model, including academics.

They will know Mrs Armstrong's boys name, in a hundred thousand years.

Neil more than Buzz?

Neil Armstrong was a badass, no doubt.
And he was the first.

But Buzz was throwing hands at 72 y/o.

C'mon, man.
Respect.

But that's the thing, not all astronauts were created equal, there is a reason why Armstrong was the chosen one, he was the greatest of them all.

Lindbergh was no Armstrong. Armstrong was like Cincinnatus, he did the job, then he went back to Ohio to live a quiet life, never sought fame, never sought fortune, never wanted to be a politician.

So your thoughts are Lindbergh wasn't heroic?
