I wouldn't call anyone who killed Macron a terrorist. Pulling out a gun and blowing his brains out... that's assassination. Planning to do it, is planning an assassination. The second part of my post wasn't aimed that much at you, it was aimed at how some media have taken to liken opposition to Macron as some "nationalist, right-wing" thing. Makes it easier for them to dismiss it that way.

Guess it all depends on your definition of "terrorism".
Acts of violence to change politics, committed by non-state actors seems like a generally accepted definition of terrorism. Using that definition, assassinating Macron could be determined as terrorism.

But if we use the definition of "causing terror in the general population, for the purpose of obtaining political goals", assassinating him would not necessarily be terrorism.

It's more about causing terror in the general population. This creates political friction for the opposing government beset by terrorism to continue some policy the terrorists want to stop. It's especially effective in democracies. AQ managed to put the socialists in power in Spain with a terror attack a while back and pull them out of the war in Afghanistan.

Assassinating the leader of your opponents is not strictly terrorism. I think where it gets fuzzy is when a terror group assassinates a leader in their opponent's government. I agree with Bjorn that it is not strictly terrorism, but there is no way to stop the broadening term of terrorism without red pilling virtually everybody on how the MSM lies and distorts everything -- which Bjorn refuses to admit is a problem even though here is railing against that problem's effect.
