Ex Secretary of State and failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has officially thrown her support behind embattled Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the upcoming elections.

Hillary's voice joins those of others in her camp, including former president Barack Obama, who expressed similar sentiments on Thursday in a similar tweet. Obama called Trudeau his "friend" and said he was "proud of the work we did together."

Bernie Sanders endorses Jagmeet Singh, NDP

Sanders' tweet is the latest in a string of political endorsements by US politicians to Canada's federal party leaders.

Failed presidential candidate Bernie Sanders endorsed Canada's New Democrats and its leader, Jagmeet Singh, in a post to his social media on Friday.

"Canada goes to the polls Monday," wrote Sanders. "There's one party that stood up for working people in the pandemic. One leader who has the courage to make the wealthy pay their fair share so everyone gets the medication they need. That's why I support the @NDP and @theJagmeetSingh," the tweet concludes.

Retired Vice-Admiral Mark Norman endorsed Conservative leader Erin O'Toole for prime minister Saturday. As the former head of the Canadian Navy, Norman was in line to become Canada's Chief of Defence staff before allegedly leaking government secrets.

"On Monday, we need to choose a leader of substance," said Norman: "a leader who will face these challenges with courage, integrity, reason and a solid plan for what's in the best long-term interest of this country."

“I believe Erin O’Toole is the leader that Canada needs now.”

The endorsement comes amid a controversial election campaign where the Trudeau Liberals came under significant scrutiny over their handling of sexual misconduct allegations in the Canadian Armed Forces and within caucus.

Norman allegedly leaked cabinet secrets about a $700-million federal shipbuilding contract to pressure the federal government in 2015 not to cancel it. He was suspended as the military’s second-in-command in January 2017 and later charged with breach of trust in March 2018, following an RCMP investigation.

After the charge stayed, Norman clarified he wanted to return to active duty. He retired in 2019 after reaching a financial settlement with the Trudeau Liberals for an undisclosed amount.

Norman pleaded not guilty because there was no reasonable chance of a conviction.

This prompted an apology from the House of Commons. The Conservatives were among the backers who contributed to Vice-Admiral Norman's defence fund.

Some commentators called the $1.4 million inquiry a "political witch-hunt."

American millionaire politicos keep weighing in on our election. After Barack Obama gave his tacit endorsement of Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau on Thursday, Friday saw endorsements from Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. Clinton, the Democrats’ 2016 nominee for president, tweeted that she was wishing Trudeau “the best in Monday’s election.” Sanders, long regarded as one of the most left-wing Democratic Senators, put his support behind NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, calling him the only one who will “make the wealthy pay their fair share.”

Meanwhile, the National Post spoke to a University of Ottawa political scientist who isn’t all that sure that Canadians will take kindly to American politicos telling them how to vote.
