What is “Good” Art?

some things that are high quality happen to be popular

some things that are popular happen to be high quality

but popularity and quality are not always linked


the hipsters go too far in thinking anything that is popular is low quality

if anything goes from obscure to popular, after they like it

all of a sudden it isn't cool anymore

they malign people who think that anything that is popular is high quality

if anything loses popularity after they like it

all of sudden it isn't cool anymore

both groups think that popularity and quality are inherently linked


meanwhile the hipsters are just like those very people they hate on

in that they allow the perception of others

to define their own tastes

both groups basically have no taste of their own

and let the crowd decide their opinion for them


then there is another group

who judge quality based on who the stereotypical fans of that thing are

they allow the quality of the fans

to control whether or not they enjoy what those fans enjoy

I agree but the Art snobs wouldn't. To keep art in its own category outside of craftsmen is why I call people who do all of the imagination themselves "artists."

you can craft perfect replicas all you like, but that is not creative

that is the constant struggle of the artist, originality, something actually creative

that has to come from within somehow, up from the depths of your psyche, you own life & experiences

Agreed. Craftmanship is really the ability to reproduce a desired result consistently. That's what you want from your contractor or someone cooking your food.

Art generally requires craftmanship, and is often missing from a lot of art. Everyone wants to be an artist, but few put in the hard work to be good enough, even fewer have the muse.

this is why I pretty much gave up on comic art, I reached as far as I could go

I could replicate other guys styles, but I never had a style of my own

other people will look at it and admire the craftmanship, but when I look at it, I can see how it is derivative

so I switched to writing, my writing is more original than my illustration
