Also, if it was sabotage they wouldn't have just wedged it across the canal they would have sunk it too.Smitty-48 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 28, 2021 9:56 amno need for sabotage, the Suez Canal is simply oldMontegriffo wrote: ↑Sun Mar 28, 2021 8:34 amIt was being navigated by the two pilots on board not the ship's crew.
It's not yet known whether it got stuck as a result of human error, high winds or mechanical failure. For those who enjoy a good conspiracy theory you can't rule out sabotage, possibly by Iran.
Really though, it's all speculation until more details are known.
It's in the ship owners interests to blame the high winds as they could be held liable for the costs incurred by all those ships which are being delayed and even those waiting for cargoes.
the new ships are so big, they barely fit through it, it's a game of inches at the best of times
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

A few dozen mines dropped by an Iranian plane would do the same trick.Smitty-48 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 28, 2021 11:31 amindeed, this is a job for 007Montegriffo wrote: ↑Sun Mar 28, 2021 11:26 amAlso, if it was sabotage they wouldn't have just wedged it across the canal they would have sunk it too.

If the US did ever start a war with Iran I suspect the canal would be the first Iranian target.

Egypt themselves blocked it for 8 years after the 6 day war in '67.

no, that would be detected, there is no air traffic in there which is not being closely observedMontegriffo wrote: ↑Sun Mar 28, 2021 11:41 amA few dozen mines dropped by an Iranian plane would do the same trick.Smitty-48 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 28, 2021 11:31 amindeed, this is a job for 007Montegriffo wrote: ↑Sun Mar 28, 2021 11:26 am

you're not getting past the combined Egyptian & Israeli air forces
the way to do it would be to emplace a mine with a timer fuse on the ship in port prior to it entering the Canal
just sail past in a yacht, drop over the side, swim up and place the mine, swim back to the yacht

also will be detected, not getting past the Egyptian & Israeli navies, they are watching for that tooMontegriffo wrote: ↑Sun Mar 28, 2021 11:53 amOr just drop smart mines off the back of a cargo vessel.Smitty-48 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 28, 2021 11:45 amno, that would be detected, there is no air traffic in there which is not being closely observedMontegriffo wrote: ↑Sun Mar 28, 2021 11:41 am

in terms of interstate war, military action, you would mine the approaches rather than the Canal itself
in the case of Iran, they would more likely mine the Straits of Djibouti by way of Yemen

Whyd we allow it to do that then and what did it do to shipping cost and the economy.

well first of all it was the Cold War and Egypt was backed by the Soviet Union, so it was behind the Iron CurtainGloryofGreece wrote: ↑Sun Mar 28, 2021 12:36 pmWhyd we allow it to do that then and what did it do to shipping cost and the economy.
at the time, America was not reliant on shipping through the Suez, China was still behind the Bamboo Curtain
