One can argue that the whole Judeo Christian tradition was a move away from human sacrifice, then animal sacrifice... and left us with the concept of Jesus' sacrifice... and finally with the last western move... towards secularism and forget sacrifice at all.
There has been something lost along the way I suspect... but still happy we have moved on from human sacrifice... no real need to go back to that.
One step too many.
Over the line, Smokey!

The idea that "we need god because..." kinda overlooks the basic fundamental concept of God.
The existence of God, conceptually or in reality, relies 0% upon human need.
That whole "I AM" thing?
Eh, forget it. You heathens never entered a Church in your lives.
Not true. I love churches and cathedrals, some of the finest medieval architecture out there. My local cathedral in Norwich is a beautiful place.
It's just the centuries of oppression I have a problem with.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Notice that wasn't an inside shot, Monte.
I didn't say your heathen ass had never seen a Church.
I said you never went in one.

You look at pagan belief systems, and you see that the gods actually "need" something from the humans. In the Assyrian account of the flood, the gods made the plan to flood the earth and kill the humans. When it happened, they then understood what they had done, because they weren't getting their sacrifices. But one of the Assyrian gods had told Utnapishtim about the plan, causing him to build the ark. He made a sacrifice, and it was said that the gods circled around the sacrifice like flies after smelling it's scent.
Sacrifices to YHWH were made in the context of atonement for sin. Abraham and Isaac was a different situation, because YHWH had no intention of actually allowing Abraham to do it.

That's why I'm perpetually amused by religion-mockers who are like
"You believe some fairy tale god made everything? Damn you're a superstitious rube. Go visit a witch doctor with your medical ills, you savage. Hahahahah! Everyone knows that first there was nothing at all, and then it exploded into everything!"
Like . . . if you're gonna mock people for believing ridiculous shit, you need to come to the table with some less-ridiculous shit.
Yeah.
I haven't been to church in many many years, but the Bible has some pretty good takes on a lot of stuff.
Consider Adam and Eve. They ate the fruit, and then they were no longer in the Garden of Eden. They left mentally long before God physically kicked them out.
Its like a metaphor for technology. We gain knowledge, the same way Eve ate the apple. Once we know something, we cannot return to the previous state. The knowledge and the tech opens a door which changes everything. I'm pretty sure Adam and Even wore animal skins after they knew they were naked. So they killed animals and wore theirs skins to try and return to the state of innocence. But there is no going back. God knew it, and told them so. Any attempts to return to the state of ignorance just lead to bloodshed.
Idk I'm doing a very bad job explaining this and I'm sorry but a lot of times I see this stuff and think, "How could someone from 4000 years ago be this prescient and have such a good understanding of human nature millenia later?" Its crazy.
I like the Old Testament more than the New Testament in a lot of ways. The stories in it are incredible. I've always liked the OT more, even when I was a little kid.
God actually provided them with the skins as a show of His mercy, that even as they were disobedient, He was willing to provide for them. They hid their nakedness immediately after eating the fruit because they now had shame as a result of their disobedient act.
You are right. Damn its been awhile since I read Genesis. I kind of messed that up. I still do think that the Bible's original sin is a pretty perfect summation of human nature. Our follies and misdeeds are wired into our being.
That doesn't mean that all is lost and we should just weep, but we need to be aware of this. Evil is real, and it exists alongside good in the heart of every man. Freud knew this too and I think his take on it is also interesting.
