The 200k was the estimation for AFTER the federal government fucked up containment. That doesn't make any sense. It's like only a charging a drunk driver for fatalities that happen after the accident and not the people who died on the scene.

Right now, less than 1% of the American population is infected. We have seen over 20k fatalities. Herd immunity starts around 70% infected. At current fatality rates, herd immunity achieved without a vaccine would cost the United States about 1.4 million fatalities.

They estimated a top of around 2.2 million fatalities, which makes sense. If the hospitals are completely overrun, then that ~15% of patients in critical care who survive would otherwise die.

Their initial numbers held up, but you can't count and figure that out.

Right now, assuming we didn't actually get swamped with a wave of type A starting last summer, only about 1% of the American population has been exposed. We have over 20k fatalities. Unless something changes drastically in terms of medical treatment, to get to herd immunity is going to cost us 70*20,000 lives.

We can delay that over time, but the fatalities are pretty much baked into the cake without some major medical development.
