Not everything that's great in life makes for a good TV show, so try giving TV show characters in a tragedy a little slack for not winning the life lottery, at least at the end, because that's the whole point.

If by degeneration you mean they found situations that allowed them to be more of who they truly were in the beginning, then yeah they degenerated. Not seeing the huge change in them that you are seeing apparently, the seeds of it were there all along in Season 1,and even before the series started. Same goes with Walter White, he was always the despicable asshole he was at the end of the show, including before the series even began.

But who they truly were was less and less like us

We actually have the fairy tale marriage, and we appreciate it, so we guard it tenaciously
