Nothing is swinging to the left now that the SCOTUS is 5-4 for the conservatives.

In an era of absolute partisan gridlock, all legislation will be determined by the Judiciary in the end.

The Democrats have already lost the war, for generations to come.
There's always rule by executive order.
Seems to be rather popular these days.
Executive orders are not laws, so easily reversed by the next Executive.

But moreover, even laws are reversible by the next Congress, so those are not secured neither.

This is why it's all about the SCOTUS, only a constitutional ruling will be entrenched.

The name of the game is stare decisis.
Ruled by ex-lawyers. What could possibly go wrong?
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Democracy in action, the GOP didn't take the SCOTUS by force

Elections matter, the Democrats just picked a very bad time to screw the pooch.

If he doesn't then next time around there won't be an incumbent president to vote for, nothing will have changed for the better and the electorate will have swung back to the left. The cycle continues.
They won't so much swing to left as the GOP will simply be leaderless because the GOP has no line of succession.
You don't think Pence will try?
I don't think he can hold the Trump coalition together.

Trump is not a conservative, that's why he can bridge the divide and take the Rust Belt.

I don't think Pence could do it, he's too conservative for a big tent.

Trump has won by stealing the Democrats traditional platform.

Which, by the way, Nixon did the exact same thing.

Barry Goldwater failed, so Nixon moved to the left, while the Democrats went loonie left with McGovern

We've been here before.

Democracy?
Rule by unelected shysters.
Be better off with a Monarchy.
At least some Kings turn out to have the interests of their subjects at heart.

I think Pence would surprise you, I think he would be an ideal candidate, truly a candidate that the Democrats have nothing on because he's kept out of trouble. I think though Pence will have to take more of a direct role this second cycle only because he will have to start to become a household name.

I don't think he would get two terms, but one at least.

Again, Hardhats vs Hippies

Who were the Hardhats?

Were they Neo Confederate Rednecks from South Carolina ?

No. They were unionized construction workers from New York City.

They were the New Dealer Democrat base, recoiling from the loonie left.

It all goes back to Vietnam. Ia Drang Valley, 1965, where the New Dealers blew themselves up.

This is why, even tho he's a PBS lefty, I am a fan of Ken Burns.

Because he really has hit on the Big Three.

The Big Three macro events which shaped America as we know it.

Civil War.

Prohibition.

Vietnam.

You do t think Pence is smart enough to work crowds and school opponents?

Don't forget Reagan did two terms, and Bush did 1...

I mean either that or we could look at Jr taking a stab at it. The one's who love Trump love Jr.

Pence is going to have a hard time winning in the Rust Belt unless the Dems continue to cede the center to Republicans. Pence is far enough to the right to give the Democrats an obvious path to victory, if they take it.
