Most of the Shia militias in southern Iraq are under Iranian control. That was one of Soleimanis jobs. Keeping in touch with Iranian Proxies in other countries and telling them what to do. That Shia militia leader was probably the one that organized the attack on the US embassy.
It was an excellent strike. It sends a clear message. If you mess with the US they will find you and kill you. Not just some symbolic bombing of an empty airstrip but the actual leader who called it. Well, killing your allies' military officers is not what I'd call a "good" kill, but otoh the Iraqi government doesn't excatly look good to most Iraqis right about now, so it may not neccesarily lead to (more) anti-american sentiment in Iraq.

If Trump is stupid enough to actually use the U.S. military in force to invade Iran it could potentially lead to the Chinese/Russians using that as a chance to take their own territory ambitions a step further while the U.S. is busy bleeding on the Iranian plateau. That Iraq/Iran war in the 1980s was illuminating for shining a light on how capable the Iranian people were of mounting a defense against a supposed superior army. Using mass wave attacks and all. Whatever they are the Persians aren't too weak to defend their homeland.
