To your point about AI it's called "abominable intelligence" in the 41st millenia. The AI nearly wiped out mankind in the dark ages so it's highly prohibited. They tend to lobotomize prisoners and such to run automated servetors or become human calculators.
That's a mechanism to bring the man back into the fight, I get it, but I like to be more speculative.

More like a couple hundred years out than a couple thousand.

I don't see AI as being a threat, the AI is simply an extension of the human brain, augmentation.

You have both autonomy and man in the loop.

The man in the loop however is the Field General, it's like a chess game, you have your pieces, the other guy has his, he's trying to get to you with his pieces and you are trying get to him.

When one or the other humans is at sword point with no escape, then it becomes politics, actually finding a resolution to the political dispute, you've closed with him, now you have to convince him to capitulate, or destroy him, but, destroying him is not preferable to a resolution by parley.

You don't want a permanent war in space, you're trying to win without annihilation, because you actually need to work together in such a remote and hostile environment.

Rather than total war of annihilation it's more like tribal war, settling disputes not killing for its own sake.

Bear in mind that my space military protagonists are Americans.

They're not space Nazis, they're space republicans.

They want peace, they simply go to war to defend liberty as a last resort.

Well in the dark age of technology man kind was untouchable no other xenos wanted to fuck with them and man kind wasn't interested in war they were just conquering the Galaxy on autopilot. Even the orks had a treaty with them which is completely unheard of. Only legends exist about what happened. Rumors of iron men revolting against the men of gold. It's widely believed that AI nearly wiped out mankind and sent them into a literal dark age with scattered outposts all over the Galaxy, most of them reverting to barbarism. It's rumored the eldar had united with mankind to exterminate the iron men. Whatever the case AI is barred and actively hunted down in the 41st millenia.

I find it interesting that the same theme plays out in nearly all space operas.

My placeholder main character is essentially Neil Armstrong.

The Neil Armstrong who fought in Korea and landed on the Moon, at the same time.

Warrior Poet.

Not sure that I'm ready to read TC's romantic fiction, a few more laughs in his story would have been enough.
Did you not want to read my novel about a young elf single mother's journey of self-exploration after she rescues a human barbarian lost in the forest?
Only if she's a black lesbian elf.
Ooh.. dark elf princess runs off from the Underdark with the human barbarian..

Thing about fantasy, I can't suspend disbelief for a made up Dungeons & Dragons world.

For fantasy I only like Sci fi, because there could be a fantastical future, but there never was a Middle Earth.
I spent some of my youngster years trying to convince myself there could have been a middle earth. I wanted to believe so badly man. Feels sad

Furthermore space war with be far more strategic than tactical.

There has be some tactical engagements, but really getting to the high ground is how you win.

The conflict will be as the world is now, the Globalists doing everything they can to bring America down.

America doing everything it can, to lead the world to the high ground.

Not just that, but warfare in space would take a really, really, really long time. You are basically firing at a ship such that your projectiles wouldn't be in its path for weeks. When the time factor draws out like that, tactics really become a kind of strategy game instead.

Again, in the realm of miraculous, I prefer Biblical, my miraculous characters are always Christian now.

I even like a fusion wherein it is futuristic, but still Biblical, no magic but God himself, no matter how far out,
