The only reason to read it is to get your proverbial doctorate in Middle Earth studies.

Oh, I don't know. It gives you the backstories of many of the later figures.
How Gollum came into possession of the one ring for example.
It's a challenging read, not helped by Tolkein's habit of giving everyone 2 or 3 names, but I wouldn't say pointless.

It's obviously cool, and a nice escape from the shit show clown world we live in now, but honestly the only reason you'd want to know that stuff is to be an expert on Middle Earth.
