I have no idea who King Leopold II is.

All I can remember from my public school education is Hitler and Slavery. If they can successfully combine the two into Trump, public schooling will be much simpler for the next generation of teachers and students

Oh, I don't know. It gives you the backstories of many of the later figures.
How Gollum came into possession of the one ring for example.
It's a challenging read, not helped by Tolkein's habit of giving everyone 2 or 3 names, but I wouldn't say pointless.
