The legal status that a territory like PR has in relation to the US federal government , is not the same legal status Greenland has within the kingdom of Denmark. Greenland has the equivalent status of a US state within the federal US system. Or a better example would be the legal status Scotland has within the UK.
But you know, you have a trillion dollar debt, so maybe your president could sell Texas and Tennesee to Mexico, Hawaii to Japan, and New York to Israel? A US state is just the federal government's real estate, after all.

Sell it, don't sell it, makes no difference either way. No one lives there, and it's already an American Island anyway.
I think that is the reason behind Trump's indecent proposal. The Greenlanders can choose to become independent anytime they want to but with 1/3 of their GDP being Danish welfare they will stay put for now.
Unless someone comes with a better offer perhaps.

56,000 people live there. If they want become either a US state or territory, Trump should have taken the issue up with them. We can't sell for the same reason Trump can't just sell Texas to Saudi Arabia.

When Greenland becomes independent and if it decides to become part of another country, they'd probably go with Canada. Pollution from US bases, the Danish-American removal of a Greenlandic community to build the Thule base and that time the US lost a nuke in a plane crash and the clean up crews weren't told of radiation danger... and now this.
The US is a neccesary trading partner, but in Denmark Greenland gets parliamentary representation. I doubt they would get similar rights under a US system.
