Yeah, out with the flag of St George. Time to teach these French fuckers a lesson.
Seriously though, these guys are only open half the year and they want Wednesdays off as well.
I'm going to put my yellow vest on and burn something to the ground.
Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our English dead.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage;
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon; let the brow o'erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit
To his full height. On, on, you noblest English.
Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof!
Fathers that, like so many Alexanders,
Have in these parts from morn till even fought
And sheathed their swords for lack of argument:
Dishonour not your mothers; now attest
That those whom you call'd fathers did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood,
And teach them how to war. And you, good yeoman,
Whose limbs were made in England, show us here
The mettle of your pasture; let us swear
That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not;
For there is none of you so mean and base,
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'

I could go to Orleans and set fire the statue of that insurgent witch Joan.

Chatres is on the way and it has a cathedral more impressive than Notre Dame.

If it burns down tonight I was here with you guys all evening, OK?

Had to drive into the centre of Orleans to find somewhere to change some sterling into funny money.
While I was there I thought I might as well go and have a look at the rabble-rousing terrorist herself.

I took these just before someone in a yellow vest sprayed
Vive la Agincourt, vive les Anglais on the side of the base.

Nice walk to the bureau de change.

Managed to step inside the cathedral without bursting into flames

The so called Saint was all over the place.

The roof in my house is 200 or 300 year old oak

Looks like you have some work ahead of you. Keep the pics coming.

French Senate says, Stop, just Stop we are going to do this right.
"On Monday evening, the French Senate approved the government's Notre-Dame restoration bill -- but added a clause that it must be restored to the state it was before the blaze, striking a blow to the government which had launched an international architecture competition to debate ideas on the restoration."

No greenhouses, no swimming pools, no minarets. Vive la France !

I'll go back again in Autumn.
Should be able to finish off the garden then.
After my Guedelon fuck up I'm going to visit on the way down next time. I bet the masons and carpenters there will know something about Notre-Dame.

Looks like the place hasn't been neglected for awhile. How long have you been going there.

Yeah, I'm sure the Guedelon craftsman are going to have a big hand in the ND restoration.
I'm so glad they are doing a restoration, and barring some 21st C architect from ruining it. Not just because of the final product, but I think it's an awesome responsibility to highlight and show mostly extinct techniques and skills.

I last visited five years ago. I was able to do the whole garden in two days with a weed whacker.
The bottom half of the garden is turning into woodland and I'm going to let it happen.
The little chalet is a spare bedroom with a shower and toilet and will be nice surrounded by trees.

I'd have liked to see a competition for designs to restore ND. Don't forget that the spire which crashed into the roof was a 19th century replacement for the original mediaeval tower.
Buildings of that age have been renovated and changed numerous times. Timbers just don't last 800 years. The floor planks at Dover castle were reclaimed deck timbers from decommissioned warships in the 1700s.
William the conqueror's castle in Falaise had modern architecture juxtaposed with the ancient stonework. Stainless steel staircases etc.
I quite like that because you can tell the old from the new.
I prefer the honesty of it rather than feeling like you are in a replica of the original.

Had time to kill in town today so I went and sat on a bench by the castle.
On the way back I noticed this model in the tiny visitor center.
Image

I'd not seen it before and it really helps show how Bungay would have looked in the 1300s.
Only a fraction of the castle still remains today.
Image

In the early 19th century there was a house between the towers of the inner gatehouse but this was removed in around 1840.
