The two identity camps blame each other for the catastrophic defeat.
They use all sorts of proxies to fight about, but all the fights come down to the catastrophe which split the nation.

My impression of Americans' view of the Vietnam war is either one of "gook devils" vs "our evil imperialist war". Both seemed to believe present Vietnamese must hate them. But again, I might not come across a representative sample of US opinion on the subject.
