Well, the Republic last for about five centuries. It was a republic of Italian peoples, dude. They were all the same.

The empire was mostly the same. By the civil wars, they had only just started to incorporate Gaul, Greece, and the eastern shores of the Med. North Africa they mostly had since the Punic Wars, but they exterminated the people there. No multi-ethnic state.

The multi-ethnic state began in a small way when Gaul was incorporated into the Empire, but really in earnest when the Germans began to migrate onto the Roman frontier in the fourth century.

By the sixth century, it had all collapsed.

Because of the Germans.

Because nobody thought of themselves as Romans but, rather, as Gauls, Franks, Vandals, Goths..

I mean.. fuck.. this is a case example of what happens. They even had to create separate legal systems in the same jurisdiction depending upon the person's ethnicity. It was a fucking mess.

Modern day Italy happens to occupy the same land mass some 1,385 years AFTER the fall of Western Rome. That doesn't mean that over a thousand years ago the land mass occupied by "Italians".

Anglo-Saxons (Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Frisians) = Anglo-Saxons.

Ask yourself to what degree 8th cent Anglo-Saxons could speak the same language and had the same culture. Then compare to what languages peoples on the Italian peninsula spoke, and what their cultural and historical background was.
