No, I think safety regulations fall within the purview of government. But Obama's top nuclear regulator is out here sounding alarm bells. Maybe I'm wrong. Who knows more about the current state of government regulation, me or the former US top nuclear regulator?

Therefore nuclear power is perfectly safe, as long as the current regulator says it is. You should ignore all "former officials" completely.

It will take some decades before the live cores in fukishima become inert if ever. There is a huge amount of risk in operating nuclear plants but luckily there seems to be a large enough group with an adequate portion of hubris to convince gen x that the future won't be radiation strewn.
