WASHINGTON — Tyndall Air Force Base sustained “catastrophic’’ damage as Hurricane Michael struck the Florida installation head on, destroying buildings and potentially leaving the post vacant for weeks, Air Force officials said Thursday.

The Category 4 storm, the strongest to ever hit the Florida Panhandle, tore roofing from aircraft hangars and mangled buildings at Tyndall, just outside Panama City, Fla., according to Air Force officials. Assessment of the storm’s impact was just beginning Thursday, but officials had already reported “widespread catastrophic damage” primarily from winds that exceeded 150 mph.

Sucks to be the CIV Squad there - at least they'll be busy for a while.

Fishing trip to St. George Island is on the shelf awhile. I've kicked around a good bit over the years between PCB, the Tyndall area, Port St Joe, Mexico Beach, Indian Pass, and Apalachicola/St. George. I can't speak for Tyndall AFB, but by and large that part of the world has always been built with the idea of just putting everything back up after a serious storm.

Yeah, but imagine the extended TDY in probably Dover for the nonners. I wonder where the planes and real airmen had to go.
