I think once you are above the poverty threshold the payments are cutoff. Once you have enough income or assets to surpass the poverty threshold it's just cutoff.

Probably because minimum wage isn’t intended to be “raise a family” wage. There’s a bizarre new belief sweeping the nation that claims anyone who is employed is entitled to earn a middle class lifestyle. Like the kid throwing newspapers off his bike is somehow victimized if he isn’t making $50k a year.

Well, now that a college degree is semi-worthless, you can kiss the middle class goodbye. You're either the Blessed Elite, or the Groveling Poor. And the Poor are getting a bit annoyed. That's not a stable situation.DBTrek wrote: ↑Tue Sep 11, 2018 9:01 amProbably because minimum wage isn’t intended to be “raise a family” wage. In SJW related news, the new bikini contest free Miss America contest ("did they just assume their gender??" ) lost 19% on its viewership from last year's numbers.

I eagerly await next year's transgender contestants and how that will impact their ratings.
Maybe Tess Holiday can get in there too... Fat shaming is not allowed.

I haven’t found that to be true for anyone but people who believe it’s true.SuburbanFarmer wrote: ↑Tue Sep 11, 2018 9:05 amWell, now that a college degree is semi-worthless, you can kiss the middle class goodbye. It's certainly not worthless unless one of those fake academic degrees. But a degree is not nearly as valuable outside of STEM now because of credential inflation (which traditional precedes the internecine conflict that brings about a short-term retraction in civilization). In the medieval period you saw that in the rising numbers of people with patents of nobility. Not enough land and roles for so many of them, so they compete with one another until it gets violent. Later on the retraction ensued. Our degrees became like the older nobility titles. Most of them are generally comparable to the poor baron in France who has no land. Don't lose your heads.

Really it depends on what your degree is in.DBTrek wrote: ↑Tue Sep 11, 2018 9:17 amI haven’t found that to be true for anyone but people who believe it’s true.SuburbanFarmer wrote: ↑Tue Sep 11, 2018 9:05 amWell, now that a college degree is semi-worthless, you can kiss the middle class goodbye. STEM degrees will probably still get you a decent job.

Not 'worthless' in the sense of having zero value. I meant that it's now just a required step in any career - like paying for the last 4 years of highschool. You're not getting a real job without one, so it has no intrinsic extra value.
There was a time when a degree was a significant leg-up in the marketplace. That time is gone. You'll still start at the bottom, doing the grunt work, same as a highschool diploma 10 years ago, and same as a dropout 30 years ago.

Notice that there's only 1 Engineering degree in there, and no Computer Science.Ph64 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 11, 2018 9:27 amReally it depends on what your degree is in.DBTrek wrote: ↑Tue Sep 11, 2018 9:17 amI haven’t found that to be true for anyone but people who believe it’s true.SuburbanFarmer wrote: ↑Tue Sep 11, 2018 9:05 amWell, now that a college degree is semi-worthless, you can kiss the middle class goodbye.
