Actually the United States is a confederation of republican states (or at least that's what we were delivered on paper, along with a sales pitch from Hamilton lying through his bastard teeth). Direct democracy exists in varying forms in the several states.

As I read it, each state agreed to provide for a republican form of government in order to become/remain a member of the union.

California is well on her way to being qualified for expulsion from the union. :goteam:

The other thing is that the Constitution didn't seem to explicitly say states needed to be democratic at all, only republican. Maybe I missed some amendment later on, though.

The thing that original generation despised was an inherited government. They weren't too keen on democracies, which is why they limited to only a subset of the population. It was more of a compromise to keep the peace.

If you think about it.. enfranchisement was limited only to the very people most able to mount a counter-revolution (landed men of means, who also mostly served in the militia).

I wonder if the original debate over enfranchisement of black slaves had at least a little to do with this principle.

Democracy, when you boil it down, begins as a compromise amongst men who could theoretically wage war against their political enemies. It's a way to have a peaceful and fair resolution of political differences amongst men without war. The threat of war is what restrained the winners from going too far.

Which is why the enfranchisement of people who literally pose no threat makes little sense.
