The other thing is that the Constitution didn't seem to explicitly say states needed to be democratic at all, only republican. As I read it, each state agreed to provide for a republican form of government in order to become/remain a member of the union.

The thing that original generation despised was an inherited government. They weren't too keen on democracies, which is why they limited to only a subset of the population. It was more of a compromise to keep the peace.
