They are also excused from work and education while attending Friday prayers each week.

And the inmates are also entitled to privileges given to all prisoners at Christmas, such as £10 bonuses and advent calendars.

A halal menu from Glasgow’s Barlinnie Prison shows it features spicy dishes such as piri piri chicken and lamb curry.

In a report last summer, prison inspectors in England and Wales said there was clear evidence that criminals were taking up Islam behind bars solely to receive benefits.
