Re: THE ERA OF TRUMP
Wikipedia says 14 years?
Regardless.
It is a serious crime.
Public atonement must be extracted.
I would very much consider Blago a good example where presidential pardon discretion is the correct avenue for leniance. (as opposed to a lighter sentence from the judiciary.)

Yes, better to make the crime explicitly sanctioned, rather than to pretend that it has the “approval” of the electorate, or any basis in justice.nmoore63 wrote: ↑Thu May 31, 2018 12:13 pmWikipedia says 14 years?

Destroying the integrity of that seat, and enabling a rich patron to directly override the wishes of the electorate is exponentially more harmful than killing any single citizen.Speaker to Animals wrote: ↑Thu May 31, 2018 12:02 pm18 years, dude?SuburbanFarmer wrote: ↑Thu May 31, 2018 12:01 pm
Enabling the direct hijacking of our government - even a 100th of it - has a much greater impact than the murder of a single person. The sentence should be maximized, honestly.
You can get shit-faced drunk and kill a kindergartner crossing the street in a DUI and not get 18 years.
The whole thing has to be consistent. You can't have females getting away with 18 months for raping a boy and then some politician getting 18 years for asking what he might get out of an appointment. It's ridiculous to even defend that.
The sentence should be exponentially greater.
The power somebody holds makes no bearing on what sentence they deserve for their crimes.
And killing a child, or even a teacher raping a child, is a greater crime deserving of greater punishment compared to asking how much you can get for a senate appointment.

So you disagree with the entire concept of presidential pardon then?SuburbanFarmer wrote: ↑Thu May 31, 2018 12:20 pmYes, better to make the crime explicitly sanctioned, rather than to pretend that it has the “approval” of the electorate, or any basis in justice.nmoore63 wrote: ↑Thu May 31, 2018 12:13 pmWikipedia says 14 years?

A monarchic decree, invalidating a crime without rationale, while still maintaining different standards for all others? Yes.nmoore63 wrote: ↑Thu May 31, 2018 12:22 pmSo you disagree with the entire concept of presidential pardon then?SuburbanFarmer wrote: ↑Thu May 31, 2018 12:20 pmYes, better to make the crime explicitly sanctioned, rather than to pretend that it has the “approval” of the electorate, or any basis in justice.nmoore63 wrote: ↑Thu May 31, 2018 12:13 pmWikipedia says 14 years?

Not the power that Blago held. The power of the office that he was tampering with.Speaker to Animals wrote: ↑Thu May 31, 2018 12:21 pmSuburbanFarmer wrote: ↑Thu May 31, 2018 12:07 pmNot really. The sentence should be exponentially greater.
The power somebody holds makes no bearing on what sentence they deserve for their crimes.
And killing a child, or even a teacher raping a child, is a greater crime deserving of greater punishment compared to asking how much you can get for a senate appointment.
And, as I said, the viewpoint is utilitarian. We’d certainly all feel more upset about a rape or murder, but the damage to millions that could be done by a corrupt senator is more difficult to measure and generate outrage.

Speaking about selling a senate seat is objectively not as serious as killing a child, dude. Are you being serious here?

Well then we simply disagree.SuburbanFarmer wrote: ↑Thu May 31, 2018 12:25 pm

Presidential Pardon is a constitutionally sanctioned act.
I think the public's interest was mostly served by the shock sentencing, and actual time spent in prison. The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States; he may require the Opinion, in writing, of the principal Officer in each of the executive Departments, upon any Subject relating to the Duties of their respective Offices, and he shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.
Further time in the rape cage does little to help the republic.
To be clear, I do not like blago.

However, wielding direct power over the life and finances of millions from a compromised position is far more damaging to society. In fact, it could directly lead to the deaths of many, many more children than any murderer could.

The public’s interest is in deterrence. And while I’m not a fan of that line of reasoning in general, it does work on politicians, who are historically exempt from any consequences at all.nmoore63 wrote: ↑Thu May 31, 2018 12:31 pmWell then we simply disagree.SuburbanFarmer wrote: ↑Thu May 31, 2018 12:25 pm

Same concept as jailing Madoff forever - it’s not that it matters to the public, but that the system was violated at a very high level.
