I suspect right about the point where the hucksters seriously believe they can become the next feudal lords is when the military takes over again and creates the real thing.
Corporate bosses are literally commanding troops right now. A good portion of them in fact.
It's possible for a warrior to become a business leader. Those guys arguably would make decent feudal lords. I am talking about the average, out of shape, weak, never served merchant class huckster.

My best guess for how it would go down in the aftermath of some total collapse of some kind.. the government that emerges would mirror the organization of the US Army. You'd definitely have a lot of militias and irregulars again, so there would be that aspect, but actual political control would break down along military lines, which is naturally subsidiarity-based, just like medieval feudalism. What probably would not happen is inheritance of office.

Any situation that sees a breakdown of order such that little warlords go pillaging will also see your money become worthless. You are only rich in this paradigm. Once the ROL is gone, you're not rich anymore. You should already know this.
