Whyd we allow it to do that then and what did it do to shipping cost and the economy.

If Egypt want to shut the canal there's not much anyone can do about it short of invading and occupying Suez. Britain, France and Israel tried that in 1956 after Nasser nationalised it but lack of support from the US led to an embarrassing withdrawal.

the Northern Sea Route in Russian waters, the Northwest Passage through Canadian waters
