To make a good journey, for example, after multiple 12 hours in a seat over the back axle of a 40’ truck there needs to be something to look forward to at the end… Like a natural hot spring. The Laird River Hot Springs in British Columbia was large & uncrowded, well appointed with a pit toilet & wooden walkway.

I had been anticipating the soothing water for 2 days, and it lived up to my expectations. My wife, Gwynne, and I spent hours luxuriating in the warmth, depending on the scalding flurries which would surprise us into jumping out. We took a break to eat dinner of mince & mash then back to the springs for another hour before a restful night of sleep smelling like sulfur because in this strange place, for all it’s relaxation & comfort, there was no fresh water.
