Armenia Vs. Azerbaijan

Post by Xenophon » Tue Sep 29, 2020 12:13 pm

Over the weekend, Armenia and Azerbaijan have been fighting over a territory within Azerbaijan, home to ethnic Armenians.
Armenia and Azerbaijan, two former Soviet republics in the Caucasus, have accused each other of initiating deadly clashes, the worst since 2016, that broke out on Sunday in their decades-long territorial dispute.

Ethnic Armenian separatists seized the Nagorno-Karabakh region from Baku in a 1990s war that claimed 30,000 lives. Since then, clashes have been a regular occurence between Azerbaijani troops and the rebels, but also between Baku and Yerevan.

On Sunday, Azerbaijan's defence ministry said it launched a "counter offensive to suppress Armenia's combat activity and ensure the safety of the population."

The enclave's separatist authorities claimed its troops shot down two Azerbaijani helicopters and three drones. Azerbaijan says it has just lost one helicopter.

Talks to resolve one of the worst conflicts to emerge from the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union have been largely stalled since a 1994 ceasefire agreement.

France, Russia and the United States have mediated peace efforts as the "Minsk Group" but the last big push for a peace deal collapsed in 2010.
Armenia's military has mobilized in response to this.

A fun wrinkle to this story is that you have Armenia, aligned with Russia, and Azerbaijan, aligned with Turkey. Both governments have threatened to get their respective regional power involved.

Azerbaijan has been getting whipped, despite having the technological advantage.

I've been to both of those places, and tensions were high between them in 2016; couldn't get from one into the other without going through a third country.

Armenia is part of CTSO, Russia's military alliance, and the Russians were caught reinforcing Armenia over the summer bringing in more military equipment. That seems to have set Azerbaijan off, with Turkey standing behind them, always wanting to see more dead Armenians.

Long as we don't get roped in somehow, IDGAF. But the concern is that Turkey triggers NATO somehow.

Turkey and Russia are just angling to get more consolidated control over the Black Sea. I highly doubt Turkey does anything that drastic. My gut is telling me that the Armenians are wanting to annex Nagorno-Karabakh in a similar way that Russia did to Crimea. Ethnic Armenians live there, they don't get along with the Azerbaijanis, and don't want to live with them. Armenia wants to annex that territory anyway, so they're willing to support dissident elements there.

Russia and Turkey will interfere in the conflict, but using "little green men" types like the Russians did in Crimea. I don't expect this to set off any global conflict.

That's my two cents, but I'm no Smitty.
