Venice, Italy
Venice was the center of the Western world before Columbus even got started, and they’re still kicking. I can remember learning about Venice in grade school, and had a poster out of Mad magazine in my room as a teenager that immortalized Venice in my mind, even though the poster’s depiction was anything but favorable. The whole canal thing is intriguing, and the fact that boats are taxis. My wife wanted to collect a rock from Venice for her friend but we had difficulty finding one since every inch of land is covered by buildings, pavers, or water.
People have been predicting that rising tides will drown Venice but they haven’t even got close to the flood of 1963 that turned many of the building’s first floors into boat garages. Sitting in a Venetian cafe drinking chilled spritzers while people-watching in St. Mark’s Square sets the travelers apart from the tourists.
