Can't believe we've been on this site this long and never had a discussion of these battles.
I'm weak on the Civil War I'm a little ashamed to say. Not sure why I've never gotten into it.

I caught the Civil War fever from Madd Zepp, as such, Gettysburg is the climax, the first major engagement, setting the stage for the broad escalation to follow, was at Shiloh Church, the first of the Civil War Battles, everything before a mere skirmish.

Ultra bad ass move by Nathan Bedford Forrest as the Confederates withdraw, rides into the Union line swinging saber, grabs a Union soldier out of the ranks and uses him as a human shield to get back across no mans land.

By the standards of the day, Nathan Bedford Forrest was a very large man, would have thrown the average soldier around like a rag doll.

To us now, those troops were the size of boys, whereas Nathan Bedford Forrest was man sized by our standards now, which made him a man beast in the 1860's

And he wasn't a genteel man, he was more like a state sponsored gangster, who was also a military genius.

Forrest is the most formidable of all the Civil War Generals. Civil War Darth Vader.

Flip was really into it. He had little war figurines he would war game with on his bed and sometimes his poodle would knock the board over. I told him, based on what I heard, the South stood like a 1:3 chance much like the Nazis and he basically agreed. The South had every reason to believe they could pursue an amicable agreement they just didn't really realize that they were never going to get one.

Marse Robert had already got his parting shot in at Cold Harbor.
