Edwards was in a vehicle with fellow teenagers Michael Jones and Chancey Luna when Lane was shot and killed. Local police called the murder a "thrill kill" because the teens were allegedly bored and decided to kill someone.

Edwards was the last of the teens to be sentenced and in 2016 pleaded guilty to a charge of being an accessory to murder after agreeing to testify against Jones and Luna. He received a 25-year sentence, with 10 years suspended. He was also given credit for nearly three years of time served.

So he traveled with the other two who wanted to murder somebody, but stayed in the car, and then later testified against the two.

It doesn't seem unusually short. He helped to prosecute the two who actually killed the guy, and did not himself participate in the murder other than watching it happen and doing nothing to stop it. He was a fifteen year old kid, served a few years in prison, and will now be a convicted felon on parole for years and facing all the consequences for what he did (and, arguably, the consequences for being a convicted felon are pretty fucking awful in our society).

I know the dude didn't know he was in disgusting company. You are your brothers keeper, right? I'd assume he knew that some good ol criminality was going to occur with his friends which they had all already done various crimes before. Wannabe gang banger that eventually smelled, barked, and bit like dogs.

I guess the salient question is how many years should a fifteen year old serve for being in the car from which others fired a weapon and killed somebody. He was not the driver or the shooter, so his participation only extended so far as his presence and unwillingness to try to stop the murder or immediately report it.

He's obviously an accessory to a murder insofar as he was in the vehicle, associated with the killers, and did nothing about it until after his arrest. There has to be some accounting for that. But then he testified against the driver and the shooter, which helped put those two away for life. So we also have to account for that.

Also, prison is a very dangerous place for somebody who so publicly testified against other criminals.
