If you folks are looking for stuff to read, you should check out NYRB. Essentially, it re-publishes old books that have been forgotten and brings attention to them. Most of the stuff I have read from them has been fiction, but they also have quite a few non-fiction books on there. I am reading a lot about the enlightenment and 18th century Europe at the moment, and I discovered Nancy Mitford has written a biography on Louis XIV and Frederick the Great, which I am about to start reading. Lots of WW2 stuff and Soviet memoirs as well. I believe Kolyma Tales by Varlam Shalamov was republished by nyrb, but that is not the version I own. That is probably one of the bleakest and most profound books I have ever read.
Some Great authors and memoirs I have discovered on there:
-Victor Serge
-John Williams (legendary)
-Curzio Malaparte
-Vasily Grossman
-Leonard Scalsia
-Georges Simenon (legendary)
These are some authors I discovered from nyrb, but they have a huge list of their classics. This may be of interest to many of the readers on this forum. You can also type in nyrb on amazon and buy these classics used (often for several dollars) and I know my college library carried many of the titles. These books are worth your time, assuming you have any of it to spare.
