Religious courts should only have an impact on what happens in that religion.
If a Catholic wants to take off on their spouse and do shit that violates canon law, then the legal consequences only impact their lives within the Church. I never heard of canon law being applied in civil family courts. Why do Jews and Muslims get this special treatment?
One reason this is a horrible idea can be found in the study of late antiquity. After the mass migrations of Germanic peoples into the empire's borders, and the integration of Celtic tribes into the citizenry, the only way they could reconcile the differences was a legal principle in which the judges had to apply your particular ethnic laws to you on court. So a German was held accountable to his tribal law and a Roman account table to civil law. The result was dysfunction and division. Entire regions became populated by Germans, Gaul was demographicaly replaced by Germanic people (Franks), and all of Gaul operating under Frankish law, customer, and culture led directly to the very provincalization that disentegrated the empire.
