Watched Dean Martin Roast Bob Hope Last Night...

Post by kybkh » Wed Apr 18, 2018 9:43 am

Started with the first two, Bob Hope and Sammy Davis Jr. (its on amazon prime)

These shows were filmed in the mid-1970's and left me with a couple original thoughts...

First and foremost is the number of racial jokes made. It really is stunning by today's sensibilities. I was particularly surprised to see them so prominent during the Bob Hope roast. I am certainly familiar with how a "roast" works and expected a certain level of depravity but I was still amazed to see these guys digging at each other then giving each other hugs afterwards.

When Omar Bradley stepped to the mic it suddenly dawned on me. This is how men talk/joke with one another in an army barracks. Then, after basic training these men would be willing to give their life for someone they just called a nigger the day before. That relationship is lost in today's world.

The people on the dais might have all been terrible racist, but at the end of the day the people whom they held racist opinions about were Americans they'd proven to be willing to give their lives for.

As shown in the graph below older generations served at a much higher rate and were forged in this environment which normalized this behavior. Imagine nearly every leader from WWI on had shared this experience and were comfortable communicating this way. One day willing to call someone a WOP or a Spic, the next day lining up at revelry shoulder to shoulder. Aware of our cultural differences but united in the greatness of our nation.

Obviously, that context has been lost to time.

You don’t know the way the people getting the digs felt about it. Maybe it didn’t bother them, but you don’t know.

BTW I saw that when it first aired. I loved Dean Martin, but the constant digs at women bothered me. You wouldn’t have known. You would have thought I was being a good sport about it.

I don't discount that.
Do you think the current war on males and specifically white males is justified ?

I think vengeance does nothing but prevent progress. I also think some of what you might consider a war on men is not.

So the fact that the men who spoke this way risked their lives to preserve our way of living means nothing to you?

Consider your relationship with your friends.

Most folks I know only let the most off color put-downs fly when they are talking to their dearest of friends because a friend that dear knows where your heart truly is.

Or better yet, a big sibling, little sibling relationship. "nobody picks on my little brother but me"...

If a Nazi burst in the room with a gun saying he was only there to kill women, you think those white folks would just step aside? If Jack the Ripper comes and says just give me the women and you all live, you think that would fly?

It really warms my heart to see the left, who incessantly denigrates me for my sex and race, referring to their racism and sexism as "vengeance" while they counter-signal alleged racism.

I had to stop multiple times and start over while writing this. That generation was my father and grandfathers and they’re all gone now. Most served. You’re asking me to put a very complicated relationship into a simple context, but it’s almost impossible to do so.

The relationship isn’t like a little brother relationship. Little brothers grow up and can serve themselves. That generation didn’t think of women in that way. It did a tremendous amount of damage. That doesn’t mean I didn’t love them or that they didn’t believe they had our best interests at heart.

Consider the world they lived in: pre-automation, 2 WWs, Influenza, Dirt Bowl, Great Depression, in all those hard times who carried the heavier load?

Be honest...Who made the world you live in even possible??

See, because of men, and the hardships 99% of the male population endured all that is around you was made possible. Their was never a time prior to the mid 1900s where women could survive outside of the nuclear family, alone. Not because men choose it to be that way but because the reality of the world.

If you expect women and children to go first in to life rafts or for men to man the ramparts, then men have the right to expect to have the first go at the dinner table or whatever other societal privileges men are afforded. Because if men are left wanting, what reason do they have to sacrifice themselves for you in such brutal conditions as existed?

That is what makes women who think the 2nd Amendment should be abolished appear so ignorant to me. A gun makes you a physical equal to a man more so than anything else. You take guns away from women and sex crimes and domestic abuse will sky rocket.

No single sex created this world or shouldered more of the load. There is no way to know what a world run by women would be like anyway. I don't expect to be treated like a child either- the kids and old folks are first to the life rafts. If God forbid it comes to that, I have a job to do.

The 2nd amendment is a side topic, but I don't oppose it. I would like to see militia membership as was intended, but that's also a side topic and not going to happen anyway.
