Teenagers hit by strong labor market

The Morning Ledger: U.S. Companies Turn to Teens Amid Labor Shortage

Good morning. Is your next employee a high school junior? A number of U.S. employers are snapping up teenagers in a bid to cope with the most severe worker shortage in the past two decades, write the WSJ’s Jennifer Levitz and Eric Morath.

Companies including General Electric Co. and Michelin North America Inc. are expanding their hunt to the labor market’s youngest echelon.

“An increasingly tight labor market is pulling many workers who had been out of the labor force back in, teens included,” said Abigail Wozniak, a University of Notre Dame labor economist. Teens might wield an advantage, she said, because they “often have better computer skills. They are not all your typical low-skilled worker.”

Lawmakers are exploring ways to ease rules so employers can hire more teens. Among the initiatives is a U.S. House bill filed in March which would amend regulations that prevent commercial truck drivers under age 21 from crossing state lines. Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D., Minn.) is looking at ways to lower the age limit to operate some heavy machinery to 17 from 18 for high-schoolers in technical-training programs.

Leftists: The greedy rich have destroyed America! No one is hiring! We deserve free college! We need illegals to do work Americans won’t do! Capitalism is a failure!

Reality: After seven solid years of labor force growth employers are having to consider hiring teenagers to fill all the available jobs.

Just something to keep in mind next time your leftist relative is pontificating like some black-hooded Antifa member about the evils of our system.

Not entirely sure I understand this correctly: So, lower your current age limit for operating heavy machinery from 18 to 17... but only at or "in technical-training programs", not at the places of employment themselves? Doesn't really read as that signifcant a change, then. But then, that's what I'm asking if I am getting this right.

I suppose this means that teens can get unto the labor market ( or the parts that operate heavy machinery) a little sooner - given how they can finish any prerequisite training for machine operation a year earlier than present, at least?
Fame is not flattery. Respect is not agreement.

Yeah, lawmakers are exploring a few options that might allow them to start making money a little earlier.

Ironic when we have huge crowds of adults completely free to protests, riot, and organize into screaming, cardboard-waving mobs at a moments notice. Maybe if the malcontents were more interested in raising their own boats rather than sinking everyone elses we wouldn’t have to figure ways to rope 16 y/o kids into the labor market.

There you have it though - entitled adults and college kids need someone to fund the social programs which allow them so much free time. Looks like you’re up next, kids.

There are plenty of workers. There are not plenty of workers willing to work for poverty wages. Teenagers, OTOH,will work for minimum wage. I would like to see what these jobs are paying.

There aren’t plenty of skilled workers whose productivity demands more than “poverty wages” struggling to find work. You see the problem as employers being too stupid to hire people that will make them money. I see it as workers being to stupid to understand their lack of skills is holding them back. If they were worth more they would be paid more.

My Mom’s side of the family is 100% Californian. Half my family is like that.

O I thought millions of Californians were Reagan Republicans to though. Either way I'm not seeing Antifa expect on websites. So there's that. Cheers.

It’s an interesting group to watch ... out of my Mom and her four siblings, only two achieved careers. The other three didn’t work, or occasionally did entry level work. My uncle (her brother), also had five kids ... of which two achieved careers, and the other three (all in their 30s now) either live at home or crash with one of the successful siblings.

So the Californian success to blame-everyone-but-myself-for-failure rate (though typically they blame republicans and big business, sometimes Christians) is a pretty solid 40/60. At least that’s how the last two generations played out.
