Why bother "declaring" war with Syria, when you and your allies are already bombing and destabilizing the country enough as it is? Just ensure Turkey keeps sending their fighters into the country, hand some money to the Rojava Kurds, and convince Israel that "Hey, yannow, I think I saw a Hizbollah general go into Assad's palace! Quick, bomb him before it's too late!". Moderately cheaper way of getting rid of the regime you've been wanting to get rid of since... what, the 70's? 60's?

Only logical reason I can think of is in hopes of provoking a reaction/reason to escalate vs Iran or even possibly Russia.

Worst case scenario is whatever Trump does, nothing changes. Best case is something changes. What we are trying to change... :confusion-shrug:

What you, and every other empire or major power has tried to change since the beginning of time: Its access to more ressources, more markets and more influence over other countries, so that when you make diplomatic deals with both rivals and friends, you do so from a position of greater and greater strength.
