Responsibility

Post by Martin Hash » Mon Jan 08, 2018 8:37 am

Evolutionary, women ensure survival by bearing children, and in modern times they can choose when and where to bear children. This overarching biological advantage gives women purpose regardless of what is happening in their personal lives, and they take solace in that; it's their meaning of life. Men, on-the-other-hand, have no such epic role. The only meaning available to men is the assumption of responsibility: to the woman, to the family, to the clan. Without responsibility, men do not mature, they remain in limbo, more than children, less than adults. They play forever, pursuing impulsive, low class pleasures. The difference between men and boys is that men are defined by the challenges they must overcome. Without that they despise themselves, become psychologically stressed. Their lives become meaningless, they choose the escape of drugs to relieve the stress.

Many women are deferring this "epic" role. Those that are carrying the burden, find themselves swamped under it, as the social fabric supporting them is thinner than ever. Others are bearing the children and then deferring the role to nannys and institutionalized care.

I would say it's not going terribly well.

How about creating our own purpose and behaving responsibly outside of exterior forces?

How very individuated of you...

Many folks aren't that far along.

I’m just less tolerant these days.

I’m starting to think we need an armada of big sticks forcing people to ‘act as if.’

Bigger parents. Bigger consequences. A return to social ostracism.

I actually don’t know the route the big stick should take.

That's really the problem with the big stick approach...

Do as I say because I know better-n-you.

Life is about incentives, not punishment.

That requires personal responsibility and accountability, which to most women is equivalent to misogyny.
