Nietzsche

Who here knows the theory of Friedrich Nietzsche and the concept of "Slave Mentality" as applied to Christianity?

Western culture, The Left particularly, drips with this shit.

Nietsche proposed a critique of western culture.

He saw Christianity as it was being practiced at the time as a form of slave morality.

He rejected the hypocrisy of preaching a morality of weakness... saw it as a way of conditioning its followers to obey and be subservient.

He sought a morality that included praise for virtues of strength.

He saw the demise of the sacred in the western world as a whole.

I would say the left is what Nietsche despised.

You missed the central piece:
"Slave Mentality" is named after how slaves felt about their masters.

Slaves (workers in modern parlance) were envious & resentful of their masters, so like all revolutionary thought, they turned the status quo values on their head to form their own values. The Ten Commandments are negative "Do not" values; opposite of pride, consumption, ambition, etc., which are the values of those who have control over their lives. Christians adopted the values of their slave predecessors.

People who have control over their lives have positive values, things to do rather than things not to do.

lool good thread! From my understanding, Nietzche was unhappy because this Slave Mentality (ie: Servitude, humility, accepting suffering as part of life etc) became the dominant ideology, when Christianity gained traction as a major belief system and Europe accepted its central tenets. Nietzche hated Judeo Christian mentality and rejected liberalism because he correctly viewed it as springing from this belief system. I think his philosophy is a trainwreck, but he was at least intellectually honest, and didn't mince words when it came to how he felt.

To all the Nietzche fanboys: read Schopenhauer. He has all of Nietzche's good qualities, and none of his bad ones. One of the few philosophers imo who understood the human condition and what it means to be conscious and alive. The world as will and representation should be required reading for anyone who likes philosophy. Makes Zarathustra seem like a Vampire novel!

Martin, if you are interested in Nietzche and his beliefs, check out Curtis Cate's biography. A bit long, but worth the read!

Nietzsche was a Stage 3 sysphilitic before he was 40. It’s tough to find wisdom in his words after Zarathustra.

He went to one whorehouse apparently and caught the dick drip that rotted his mind. He was getting awful friendly with that horse though...
