2017 Election - What does it mean?

Post by PartyOf5 » Wed Nov 08, 2017 10:14 am

Starting a thread dedicated to the elections that took place yesterday.

So what does this mean? Reading the MSM headlines it sounds like Trump lost and is no longer POTUS. Does winning 2 governorships (still down 16 to 33) and electing a transgender person a good indicator of what's to come in 2018?

The GOP congress has failed miserably so far in 2017. This is going to hurt them in 2018, the question is how much? How much will their ineptitude hurt races further down the ballot? I feel 2018 will be all about Trump for Democrats, but more about Congress for Republican and Independent voters.

I think the healthcare debacle is huge. The republicans bitched for seven solid years about health care, saying they could do better. Then, zilch.

I think it's going to come down to what the R controlled Congress can get done before next summer. If they can enact policy that makes sense for most Americans, they will sail on through. If not, the D team will have a lot of ammunition.

"You've got an asshat clown in the white house and your Congress can't get anything done." - something along those lines.

No matter if you do/don't trust polls, Trump's approval ratings will come into play, and those are very bad. Also, the opposition party typically wins in the mid-terms, so there's that.

If 2016 wasn't telling you anything let this election make it official. Polling is fucked. The turnout models are "educated" guesses they have no idea who is showing up to vote and if they have to delineate white people, especially women, they might as well look at an animals entrails. The polls in Virginia followed the same standard narrative formula. A few months out lean heavily on the Democrat so the media can write "everybody hates republicans" stories then when accuracy counts start the real polling after poisoning the well and SURPRISE!!! It's tightening, it suddenly gets closer for no apparent reason. But here in this race the polling followed that formula but Democrat won by 9 points even though the polls had it with 1 or 2 points, some even had Gillespie winning.

Chris Adams: Gillespie Ran a JEB! Campaign in a Trump World
Let’s take a look at a few pieces of mail I received. Put aside the woeful electronic media campaign, and the nearly non-existent social media effort. Let’s just look at the mail.

The messaging was almost nostalgic, longing for a political world pre-Trump, pre-Obama, pre-polarization. It's as if President Bush was running for reelection in 2004, and it was no accident we seemed to get the same campaign.
Ouch, GOP.

Off year elections are meaningless from a larger narrative.

They are impactful in that you can get random stuff done by highly motivated people because turnouts are so low.

Yeah, republicans need to abandon the guac bowl politics and the insufferable suits that advance those politics. Like yesterday.

Tell that to the MSM. It's all about Trump to them. They are using terms like "a new era", "massive victory", "seismic change", blah blah blah. I know they've had little to boast about lately, and maybe this is all just pent up frustration combined with rose-colored glasses. Whatever the reason, the "new reporting" on this is sickening. I have lost all faith in our media to tell us the truth. The bias and manipulation is so obvious it's sad.

Q: What are early-term elections good for

A: Absolutely NOTHING!

It's like judging a 20-mile marathon after the first mile... There is plenty of time to change things.

Your math skills need work. At the mid-terms we will be closer to 10 miles in.
