By mid 2002 we had normalized to our new reality of war against some Muslim and increased "security" (surveillance) at home. I was ready to get back on with life. I tuned out. I was still very anti-war but whats the difference between fighting in Iraq or Af/Pk to a 20 something year old college student. Herey, therey, samey, samey.
I picked back up in 2005 when I got my first FWM job at a TV station doing remedial accounting work that required less than 4 true hours of work a week. It was real nice. I had a TV in my office and unfettered access to the internet. I was still mainly a Bloomberg/CNBC type but I'd watch Hardball because CM was the loudest MSM critical voice re:GWoT at that moment. That also happened to be the same year 'Loose Change' was let loose in the interwebs and the birth of Fake News.

Loose Change was a taught page turner. All the pieces for a terrific spy novel. And it was the first piece of fake news propaganda to spread across social media platforms like MySpace. Falling down the rabbit hole of conspiracy on Youtube in 2005 was as easy as typing "temperature metal melts". Next thing you know you'd be hearing about Project MKUltra, the obvious crookedness of the Federal Reserve, the CIA back Iranian Revolution, babies in incubators, Project Mocking Bird, etc, etc... I credit the DCF for helping to pull me from that abyss in 2007-08. By then however we were in the midst of a full blown financial panic and the"conspiracies" seemed even more obvious than before and my mind had already been tilled by the true accounts of our covert CIA operations of the mid to late twentieth century.
Bush had already destroyed the US Govt's credibility with most folks. It had become obvious that Iraq was a fool's errand and the WMD red herring was ripe with stench. So, when the Govt went about covering all of Wall Street's bad bets after just pissing down our backs and telling us it was raining in Iraq, the teapot of distrust with our political leaders and the MSM started to boil over.
This was the breaking point.
I started paying attention to Russia for the first time following the Georgian War. Up until that moment I was surprised by how well we seemed to be getting along with Russia. They were helping us with logistics in the the GWoT. We were doing military exercises together. There seemed to be absolutely zero chance of a military conflict. I have come to realize that our relationship was less rosy as it seemed but it was obviously better than today by a great margin.
With McCain bellowing for military conflict with Russia which almost certainly would have resulted in a full scale nuclear war I was getting anxious again like in 2002. So I began trying to gain perspective of this nation, who I am being told by people I do not trust, is the "enemy". I started looking at Pravda.ru and tass.com. I knew these were pure propaganda sites, but I was curious about what they were saying because it might provide some insight on how close nuclear war really was.
By 2012, if you were a card carrying Paul-bot like me, there is certain level of collusion that you believe already exist within our own govt and private entities and you probably sought out reporting which confirmed your anti-war/collusion opinions. Russia saw this meme developing and RT.com started promoting Ron Paul and other anti-intervention political figures and stories. Obviously, this would be in Russia's interest. It doesn't make all the reporting they did re:MENA or the financial system to be false. It simply means they were doing selective editing as I am guessing many news sources have done in the past (see video above 19:00-23:00).
Let's fast forward to our current timeline. Right now, these people I don't trust are telling me Trump is a racist...
And Russia is our mortal enemy who colluded with Trump during an election to undermine American Democracy...
