The Real Problem With America...Fancy Moms

Post by kybkh » Fri Sep 08, 2017 2:23 pm

Calling her parenting style a “functional hot mess,” Walters explains that her 6-year-old just started kindergarten at a school in the family’s new “razzle dazzle” neighborhood, and walking the girl to the bus stop has been a “traumatic” experience. That’s because the neighborhood moms seem to lead perfect lives, particularly one woman who makes Walters feel particularly inadequate.

Nervously peering out the window of her home, Walters points out the woman’s so-called flaws: “She’s so fancy … she’s skinny and she wears tennis clothes and a visor every day … she kisses her kids on the top of their head … she’s just so good at life.”
Walters describes her “soul killing” efforts to fit in with her bus stop peers, with small talk about the weather.

While the video is obviously tongue-and-cheek, the social anxiety that Walters experiences is very real. “I’m not cut out for it,” she says. Her words struck a chord with Facebook fans who wrote comments such as, “OMG, this is so me!” and “I recently dealt with this when we moved to suburbia when my daughter started kindergarten. Just show up in your hot mess, who cares. It’s usually the ones that pretend to have their lives together at 8 a.m. that their world is falling apart.

This is on Yahoo.com homepage as trending news. A woman who feels shame for not being as good of a parent as her neighbor (in Walter's own stated opinion).

This is "narrative news". What narrative is being pushed? Why is this video worthy of being on Yahoo.com homepage?

Beyond all that though, lets talk about what this woman is doing, how she is behaving and what she is saying.

First, she starts the video reveling in her laziness so other "moms" can relate. She talks about how hurried her life is while appearing to be a stay at home mom in a wealthy subdivision in Baltimore. Then she scurries around her house as if she is hiding from her neighbors because of how uncomfortable they make her feel. She references how her family "ruined the neighborhood" because she doesn't have a well kept lawn (never mind the fact that as she is ease dropping on her neighbors conversation that we can all clearly see it is a well kept lawn).

What I find especially interesting is her thoughts about her neighbors attempt to interact with her. Faulting her neighbor for always referencing the weather and speaking in a high tone of voice which is often used to express friendliness. This is typical suburban behavior yet, Mrs Walter's considers it to be "soul crushing"?

This is my wife..."she’s skinny and she wears tennis clothes and a visor every day … she kisses her kids on the top of their head … she’s just so good at life." Trade tennis gear for running clothes and that is her. My wife is not fancy, she talks about the weather as to avoid offending anyone, and she is a perfect mom. Maybe that is what bothers me so much about this "viral video". The fact that this woman could be video taping my wife, commenting on her behavior in a clearly negative fashion, then blaming my wife for her own social anxiety disorder.

The fact that she has to retreat to the den to recover from a morning of absolute laziness is just icing on the cake. This country will not survive. We better start talking about how to go our own ways peacefully.

Fact is, a lot of women these days are totally unsuitable for marriage and motherhood. Of course they feel inadequate. You cannot "have it all" as a woman. If you want a career, then there comes times you have choose between your family and your career. You will feel like shit no matter what you choose if you believe you can do both. Meanwhile, a lot of them grow up without any sense of social roles and duties so that, even if they do the stay-at-home mom thing, it's all too easy for them to fuck it up. They didn't exactly have good role models growing up to learn from this department, especially if their mothers were Boomers.

This is the mirror image of the catastrophic decline in masculinity. We are all fucked up right now. Most of us, anyway.

You're taking this article too seriously. The author is reverse humblebragging. Your wife sounds like a nice person who has her life together. Other women may be mean in envying her, but it's envy nonetheless.

Nothing pisses me off as much as SAHMs talking about how they have the hardest job in the world.

And then there are tons of them who can't even do that job and expect their husbands to clean up and do all kinds of work when he gets home from his job that is the only thing allowing the family to survive

That being said, StoA is completely right that women cannot have it all, but since they have smoke blown up their asses from day 1 that they are strong women who can do anything they try. And fail. That's why so many women are unhappy, that's why so many women are alcoholics, that's why so many marriages fail. The do-it-all-strong-woman just destroyed my best friend's family by working so hard at work and being such a martyr at motherhood that she finally drove them to divorce.

I think many women would be happier at home. Hell, I would be happier at home myself, and the vast majority of my hours at work consist of sleeping, streaming movies/shows, and shitposting. Cleaning up the house, taking care of the kids, exercising, etc sounds like a dream job

It's more difficult to care for small children than to work in an office, by far. Do you not remember the constant sleep deprivation? Or were you not the person who was sleep deprived? It doesn't get easy until the kids go to school.

And of course women can do it all. They always have. It's not pleasant but that's life. Your great grandmother probably worked while raising children. The difference was often familial help that isn't available today, and you can't blame women for that societal change.

How long one deals with small children is totally up to them. You pop one out ever 12 months and keep it at 4-6 years of intensive child care. After the kids is in kindergarten as the lady above, they dress themselves, feed themselves and are shitting on their own. It's a cake walk. First 2-4 year is tough, if you are doing it right.

This lady has a nanny and is still flying off the wall, with no little kids in sight.

Like I said, she's reverse humblebragging. Raising children shouldn't be a walk in the park, though (although you should literally walk in parks). It's also less pleasant than working in an office. I went to a nice office every day that I didn't have to clean, ate food that I didn't have to cook, had lots of interesting interactions with other people, was intellectually challenged, and every two weeks I got a nice financial reward. It's a big deal to give that up. Could you, realistically, end your career easily and be dependent on your spouse for the rest of your life?
