Letting Ideologies Concentrate

Post by Martin Hash » Fri Jul 14, 2017 8:43 am

Seattle surtax on The Rich

People online often hypothesize about the U.S. splitting into ideological regions, and I see nothing wrong with that. We used to be a mobile nation, and people moved to where they could get good jobs, live near the grandkids, better weather, etc. If Socialists want to move to Seattle, Portland & San Francisco, people who value liberty first must needs be move away. Fighting a losing battle will only make you angry & bitter. Better all the crazies are bunched together in one place.

So in this hypothetical, is there still a US or are we split into several countries?

That's not gonna happen. There needs to be a way to limit the damage the "Can't hunt bears with dogs" kind of laws that get passed by a majority of city dwellers who think their $300 sneakers makes them outdoorsmen, and people who live in crazy socialist cities but don't like it need to move out. Telecommuting maybe? Outdoorsy offices in rural areas for non-Uber types? Some way to separate the differing ideologies.

If I take your thought correctly, you are saying US stays intact as a federal government? I don't think that could work. Does the federal government not get to make any laws on social issues? how do you prevent Californistan from disregarding the federal laws it disagrees with? Or are you envisioning a complete remake of the government, that ends up being way more federalist?

I don't have many problems with the Feds. I like to be able to cross State lines & know my Rights are the same everywhere. The cities, however, are nutso.

I don't get it then. If we concentrate ideologies, but don't change the structure of government, how does the country not split very quickly? How many Trump elections before Seattle decides they are out? If the federal government passes abortion restrictions, how does the super liberal west coast react? It puts the state level government in a really weird position.. all of their constituents want them to fight the law, but doing so means defying the federal government and possibly starting a crisis.

Nice thought experiment.

IDK, what would the crisis look like? Integrating the schools in Alabama with the National Guard? Waco? Katrina?

What if the Feds started arresting pot smokers? How would the States react?

We elect two consuls, one from the cities and one from the rest ofthe states...tell them nothing happens if they don't both agree, and if they take us to war they're "over there" leading the troops?
