The Westboro Baptist Church is planning to protest at Leavenworth High School's graduation ceremonies. The school hosts the kids of military personnel posted at Fort Leavenworth, and actively promotes inclusion for gays etc, thus doubling the ire of the Westboro church.

I read an interview with a former member of that church. She explained that the church see themselves as a modern day Noah. To them, the ridicule they face is identical to the harassment Noah from the sinful world as he built his ark, only to be vindicated when the Earth flooded and his sinful neighbors drowned. In a way, this worldview is not mean spirited, but actually one formed out of fear. They are trying to warm the world of its impending doom, but they realize they will be treated harshly for revealing unpleasant truths. Maybe in their minds they are being compassionate, by doing very visible protests to wake people up.

I am not defending the church of the Phelps family. I think they are vile people, but the interview was interesting, because it gave better insight into why these people behave the way they do.
