New Alamo exhibit displays history of Jim Bowie, Bowie knife
SAN ANTONIO - March 6 will mark the 181st anniversary of the fall of the Alamo. ... Part of the commemoration includes a new exhibit called "Jim Bowie: Man, Knife, Legend."
...
Both the knife, which was used in a legendary brawl in Natchez, Mississippi, and its namesake have become household names.

"Ever since then, Jim Bowie was famous and his knife was famous with him,” Preston said.

Bowie then made his way to defend the Alamo, cementing his legacy and the legacy of his weapon of choice.

"Even now, the Bowie knife resonates in pop culture. ... it’s a knife that became iconic in 1827 and remains iconic now."

The entire history of Bowie and his knife are chronicled in the new exhibit.

Bowie knives look cool, but I'm not sure what I'd do with one.

Something around 60% of cuts made in bar fights are done with the back edge of the blade. The Bowie knife was sharpened on the back edge I think but it's not necessary. If you look at the way the point is shaped the back cut doesn't need to be sharpened to cause serious trauma. From what I recall Jim actually fashioned the knife to attack buffalo hides efficiently.

A lot of those guys fought with forward grip, edge up.

It's weird to think about, but it makes sense if you are fighting with very large knifes. Use the spine to parry. And that back cut, which is devastating and lightning-fast with the bowie blade shape, is just an easy forward twitch.

Not many people would fight like that today, though. I can't even find an image of somebody using that grip with an actual bowie knife.

I have the same knife from the franklin mint and a blueprint made by joe musso. One of the few knives I intend to make before kicking the bucket.
