Relax, You're Normal
Odds are everything you do, everyone you know & everything you think is normal. This simple but unappreciated fact means that you are not special, but it also means that the idiosyncrasies of your life, or the perversity of your thoughts are no different than anyone else's. Your divorce followed the familiar formula of everybody's, your stalled career is everyone's, we are all incompetent.
Statistics is almost magical in its predictive powers, its ubiquitous presence & its universal application. Statistically speaking we are all the same: we act the same, we think the same, our hopes & fears are the same... Close anyway: two-thirds, one-sigma in statistical nomenclature, are the same; and 95% of us are the same at two-sigma. That means that any thought, any feeling, any experience has a twenty-to-one chance of being within two-sigma of anyone else's. You are not extraordinary lustful, nor notably lazy, nor remarkably uninformed: stop feeling ashamed, inadequate & naïve.

I'm not sure whether I should feel liberated or disappointed.

I'd say that the MHF is most definitely an outlier group though.

With sad countenance and downcast eyes, Aeneas wends his way, quitting the cavern, and ponders in his mind the dark issues.

I think a major problem in our society is that too many people are trying to be extraordinary and end up exhibiting abnormal behavior to achieve that end.

When I was a kid, the catchphrase amongst my glorified babysitters was:
"Just be yourself."
As it turns out, I soon learned, they didn't really mean it--not one bit.
