MSM buys 50% of its traffic from China

New York Times, Washington Post and The Guardian caught buying TREMENDOUS amount of pageviews from China for ad revenue and relevance

Traffic begins to pick up significantly around the middle of December for all three. Here’s a look at the overall picture compared to various other news outlets:

That’s odd. Now let’s take a look at each outlet’s traffic by country for the NYT, which shows significant increases in visitors from China, jumping from 5.1% to 49.2% of all site traffic in two months:

What’s most interesting is that The NY Times has been completely blocked in China since 2012, and just last month Apple was ordered to pull two NYT apps from the App store despite users being unable to view content since the original 2012 ban. Per the NY Times:

“When the Chinese government began blocking the Times websites in 2012, it also prevented users with Times apps from downloading new content.“ People seeking to bypass internet filters have traditionally used VPN’s (Virtual Private Networks) which tunnel through China’s highly restrictive firewall, however China has been cracking down on VPN use for several years.

Now let’s take a look at the Washington Post and The Guardian, which are notblocked in China – jumping from virtually no traffic to 58.9% and 57% of site-wide visitors respectively.

These dramatic increases in traffic have significantly bumped each site’s Alexa ranking by as much as 38%, a key metric used in website valuation. Of note, BBC.com experienced a similar boost, and others may have as well.

Not to overstate the obvious, but considering the URL ban on the New York Times, one might conclude that this massive increase which now accounts for nearly half of all website traffic is some type of high volume traffic generating bot server unimpeded by China’s restrictive firewall, synthetically inflating visitor counts for affected sites.

Check if your local Lügenpresse-outlet gets ad revenue with the same method at http://alexa.com

If true, possible fraud cause of action if investors induced to act on data.

Advertisers should be able to sue for damages.

This article is complete nonsense, and the "zeropointnow" from iBankCoin.com should feel like an idiot for writing it.

Alexa pageview data is garbage, and anyone who understands how they collect data knows this. All of their data is collected by people who knowingly, or unknowingly, have installed the "Alexa Toolbar". That's their entire dataset, and it is very small in comparison to the number of internet users worldwide.

This is not Google Analytics with server-side integrated plug-ins to analyze site traffic.

This is extrapolating an entire dataset from 2 sets of people, those who don't even know what's installed on their computer (and probably have malware), and those who are trying to manipulate their Alexa ranking.

Now, how could all these people in China be looking at NY Times, even though it's blocked by China's firewall? While we don't know the inner workings of the Alexa toolbar, you should be able to see that if it determines your country by non-IP indicators, like language settings, most use country domains, and most visited webpages, it would record a pageview from China even if the user is routed through another country's VPN.

How did Alexa determine these numbers? What is their dataset comprised of?
Alexa's traffic estimates are based on data from our global traffic panel, which is a sample of millions of Internet users using one of over 25,000 different browser extensions. In addition, we gather much of our traffic data from direct sources in the form of sites that have chosen to install the Alexa script on their site and certify their metrics. However, site owners can always choose to keep their certified metrics private.
I doubt a single MSM website has the Alexa scripts installed on their website, this is all "estimates based on data from our global traffic panel", which is people with shitty browser extensions.

There is a reason Google set up Google Analytics as a widget instead of a toolbar, and that is because a toolbar creates a self-selecting sample. Anyone who understand statistics will know that using self selected sampling to extrapolate universal dataset is how you get garbage results.

Here's some reasonable analytics from SimilarWeb (not as accurate as Google Analytics would be, but 100x better than Alexa):

The vintage corporate media sucks, because it's product that it is trying to peddle sucks.

Anyone ever heard of an investigative reporter anymore ?
NO, these bitches just print what is put out in establishment talking points.

I think fraud is a great way to go. But the bigger story behind the board room doors is investors suddenly finding out so few people are truly interested in their product that it became expedient to fake it.

Of course they don't, because [CURRENT YEAR]! No one uses Alexa anymore, Google Analytics has all of their business. You don't know what you're talking about, and neither does the author of this article.
