The Gembira Loka Zoo on the island of Java in Indonesia is an absolute gem. It's on a beautiful, large, natural estate though there a relatively few animals. Most of the guests were children, orphans it turned out, all dressed the same in green, the girls in hijabs. Indonesia is an Islamic country & Call-to-Pray was a noisy, cacophonous even, since many of the animals joined in.

The most interesting physical aspect of the zoo was its use of running water & lush green foliage, very inviting & comforting to both the visitor & the animals. The reptile exhibits were exceptional with very large komodo dragons & Galapagos tortoises down to newly hatched baby lizards. Rare Sumatran tigers also had a large, accommodating enclosure. There were giant, hollow, concrete dinosaurs to walk through, a shrub maze with a vintage airplane at the center, powerboat rides, elephant & camel rides, and a brown Mickey & Minnie Mouse at the ATV track.

Most different from all other zoos was the performing animal show: geese, guinea pigs, otters, cockatoos, and starring a tricycle riding bear. A young orangutan also made an appearance, and liked to hug.
